Loft conversions are increasingly popular as extending upwards is a great way to add new bedrooms, a second bathroom or more living space. In my opinion, the best type of loft conversion is the Mansard Loft Conversion where you build up the party wall brickwork and fill in between. This will give you the most space but unfortunately it costs a bit more and party wall agreements will be required with adjacent properties.
Dormer Loft Conversions tend to be the most popular as they are simpler to do than the mansard and suit almost all types of property.
You can also do a Velux Loft Conversion which is effectively using the existing loft space with the addition of Velux windows, to make new living space.
Most loft conversions do not require a planning application but you have to check to ensure that is is the case.
